VACCINATE YOUR MATE |

This site has been set up to alert dog owners about the importance of vaccinating their dogs and ensuring that their vaccinations are kept up to date. Although a lot of the information and data on this site relates to the "scene" in Australia, as dogs all over the world face the same risks, it is just as important to ensure that dog owners everywhere are aware of these risks and take the same precautions. |
WELCOME TO "VACCINATE YOUR MATE" |
Currently, in Australia there are three main vaccine combinations in popular use and these are regularly called the a C3, C4 and C5. Although there are C6 and C7 combinations as well, normally these would normally be administered if your vet considers that there are "special" circumstances that relate to your dog. The most important thing for you, as a dog owner is to ensure that you visit your vet regularly (at least yearly) and ask for his advice because he knows what the current situation is in your locality and if there are any specific dangers your dog may be facing. Without going into a lot of detail, the vaccines that are commonly used (C3, C4 and C5) are used to protect your dog against the following viruses and conditions: C3 - Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis and Canine Parvovirus. C4 - Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Canine Parvovirus and Canine Parainfluenza (The Viral component of Canine Cough) C5 - Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Canine Parvovirus, Canine Parainfluenza and Bordatella Bronchiseptica (The Bacterial component of Canine Cough) Thankfully, due to the widespread use of vaccines, many of these viruses are not very common in many parts of the world. Kennel Cough is still quite common and although it does cause a lot of discomfort to infected dogs, if it is treated promptly, it is not generally life threatening. Canine Parvovirus (also known as Parvo or CPV) on the other hand, is a major concern for dog owners and vets all over the world and it's a sad fact that there are more and more cases being reported daily. As Parvo is such a large concern for us all, most of the information on this site will concentrate on Parvo with the hope that more people will learn about the dangers of the virus and help to spread the word to dog owners everywhere. |
"Common" Canine Vaccines. |
If at any time your dog seems "off colour" or unwell, please don't hesitate to contact, or visit your vet as soon as possible. Don't forget that your dog's life may depend on a speedy diagnosis and treatment. |
* If left untreated, a dog that is infected with Parvovirus can die from dehydration in less than 24 hours * |
